creativity, play, friends

As part of a visual self portrait at school Hazel listed "partying" as something she was 'good at'. So you can imagine with her sixth birthday was a big event. In the lead up she wrote list after list covering categories such as guests, food, games, music and themes. A little closer to the date she collated these into a book, the party book. The themes were elaborate, ambitious and resource-wise, demanding. In total seriousness she requested Taylor Swift. This was when the Gym bus party was sitting at top of the list. As in, Could Tay Tay sing on top of the Gym bus? I'm sure Tay Tay could pull it off but as I explained, she had tour commitments. Closer to the date I became more nervous. Any attempt to firm up plans was met with tears. So we put the lists, the book and the talk to one side. And while all the party planning was on hold I got to thinking about parties and how the art of throwing a party was being lost in a culture of outsourcing. Goddammit, I thought, we are going old school. Breaking the news was tough. Hazel cried and cried and cried. Holding her wrapped in a blanket after her epic sob session we gazed at the empty yard and hills hoist against a grey sky. That hills hoist would make a great frame for some streamers, I ventured. Eventually, my little party animal looked up and agreed. Her spirits lifted. She loved the days of preparation, all of us working together on baking, games and decorations (including a purpose-built "Welcome" booth for Otto in the front yard). Sure, I had a crisis on the morning. I was literally puffed from tidying the house at double speed. If I was throwing a pool party I wouldn't be puffed, I'd be holding a latte.

But Hazel welcomed her friends with pride. They had a great time. My favourite thing? Watching the kids tear around in an hour-long game of hide and seek. They didn't need anything other than each other and a glass of water. Parched hunters and nervous, excited prey. It was a Happy Birthday.

Es así de sencillo

I got a text message yesterday, photos attached, of Oli playing with painted blocks. Isn't that nice? I am really taken with how delighted he seems by them. I painted them a couple of years ago now at a time when I seemed to spend a lot of time on the floor building things with the monkeys. You can probably tell from the photos that they are double sided, a male and female figure, dressed in 18th century Swedish dress. Sometimes I wonder where my ideas come from. I really don't know. I think I was just sitting around the dining table when I spied an ANNA biscuit tin, beautifully painted with folk motifs from northern Europe. I might have been holding a Jenga block in my hand. I'm pretty sure I was wondering what I might make for the upcoming Harvest Textiles market.

One of Oli's friend's has taken a shine to them. I've been commissioned. I'm looking forward to painting some more. The sight of them all lined up waiting to dry is very satisfying. I stain them with a non-toxic wood oil to finish and pack them in calico bags.

As Dora might say: Es así de sencillo.

I was just toodling about checking out Maja Baska's website  when I came across these shots. Who are these dudes? And where can I find their leather action? What is that arrow over the crotch?

Let's just say, I love it.

The party whisperer

Hazel often has trouble falling asleep. Stevie Zee likes to help her in that direction through a series of visualisation exercises that usually involve who is awake (The owls are awake, the possums are awake...) and who is asleep (Coco is aselep, Arki is asleep...). That way together they map Hazel's universe.

Recently, with Hazel's birthday approaching, it's involved birthday party preparations (what Hazel will wear, who will be in attendance, games played). Usually I am on the couch watching Air Crash Investigators, feeling glad someone can use their imagination and speak coherently after 8pm. But as the party draws near, I've become concerned: what kind of fantasy have those two constructed? And will it match reality? I don't usually outsource services of any kind other than taxation but this called for some professional advice.  Thankfully Belinda of littlechair is like, my neighbour and sometimes collaborator. I turned up at her door in a state of high anxiety pretty well masked until I spilt my tea all over the table.

I know what you are thinking. Get a grip. But I feel like I have a bit of overcompensating to do. I wasn't there for Hazel's first or second birthday. Interstate! Not present. Belinda didn't know any of this but like a good medical practitioner, she asked the right questions, listened to the answers and then put forward a number of sensible suggestions at just the right speed. We workshopped furniture (children sized table and chairs), table decorations, activities and games. Hazel got the final say on the palette (pink, no real surprise there but we drilled down to pastel rather than fuscia). Through all of it Belinda was a calm, encouraging guide.

We will play a game that Belinda and I created, a version of pin the tail on the...this involves popping birds into a nest. The one below is in yellow but I am working on a version with a red balloon and pink birds for Hazel's big day.

Christmas Bingo

I feel like I fried a few brain cells this past fortnight getting Christmas bingo and the Advent calendar to market. But they are done! I'll post on the calendar soon. This little project has been a collaboration between Little Chair and Sweet polka. We've really enjoyed it. No surprise really. Remember the Coke commercial that was the Little Chair logo?

Believe it or not I've never played bingo. But I've put my very own bingo aside for Christmas day. I plan to bring it out at that sleepy side of the day, between lunch and left overs. I want to cry "Bingoooo!".
